Bearcats set team record for consecutive wins

VESTAL, N.Y.--After playing until well after 1 a.m. the night before to pull out a dramatic 4-2 win over Stony Brook, the Bearcats (12-7) returned to the courts Saturday afternoon and defeated a strong Bucknell squad 4-3 on the West Gym Courts. The win was the ninth straight for Binghamton, which establishes a new school record. The previous record of eight straight wins was set in 1987.

"The most incredible thing about my team is their heart," head coach Jamie Campbell said. "They are more determined than any team I have ever coached."

The Bearcats lost the doubles point to open the match, but won four singles matches to clinch the win.

"Bucknell was a great opponent," Campbell said. "They are a very tough team and they pushed us to the limit. The windy conditions were difficult for both teams, but we kept persevering and got the win."

At first singles, freshman Justina Hakimi (Manhasset, N.Y./Herricks) extended her individual winning streak to nine matches with a 6-1, 6-4 win. She teamed with sophomore Alexis Brill (Syosset, N.Y.) at first doubles, but the pair was defeated 8-4. Brill won her match at fourth singles 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Junior Janine Sadaka (Great Neck, N.Y.) won a dramatic match at the second spot. After trailing in the third set 5-2, she forced a tie-breaker and won 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-2).

"Janine kept battling and had a great comeback," Campbell said.

Sadaka and senior Amy Weissberg (Syosset, N.Y.) were defeated at second doubles 8-6. Weissberg was also defeated at third singles 6-7 (3-7), 7-5, 3-6.

Sophomore Amy Linda (Bronx, N.Y./LaGuardia) moved up to fifth singles and lost 4-6, 6-4, 4-6. At the sixth spot, freshman Jenilee Brohm (Norcross, Ga/St. Pius X Catholic) picked up her first collegiate singles win, defeating her Bucknell opponent 6-2, 6-0. Linda also played with senior Kristin Jobe (Baytown, Texas/Texas City) at third doubles, where the pair was defeated 8-6.

On Sunday the Bearcats will take on Vermont at 10 a.m. on the West Gym Courts.
