tennis drops close match to Buffalo 4-3
Santos
posted two impressive wins to pace the Bearcats
BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Binghamton
University women's tennis team (3-5) forged an early 3-0 advantage,
but the University of Buffalo rattled off four straight singles
wins to rally for a 4-3 victory Sunday afternoon.
For the second straigh dual match, BU cruised through the doubles
portion with wins at second and third doubles. Junior Jillian
Santos teamed with senior Yulia Smirnova
for an 8-0 triumph at second doubles. Meanwhile, juniors Marina Bykovskaya and Emma
Leibowicz tallied an 8-5 decision at third doubles. Both
tandems were victorious in the squad's 5-2 win over the University
of Pennsylvania on Friday.
The Bearcats built a 3-0 lead behind singles wins from senior
Anna Edelman and junior Jillian
Santos at first and second singles, respectively. Edelman
registered a straight-set triumph over UB's Diana Popescu. Santos
breezed past Aleksandra Petrova 6-3, 6-0 as she recorded her
fourth consecutive win, dating back to the outing against Penn.
Between her singles and doubles performances, Santos only dropped
three games for the entire day.
Trailing 3-0 with four matches to finish up, Buffalo erased the
sizeable deficit with straight-set wins at fourth and sixth singles.
Marta Stoyanova needed to rally to defeat Smirnova at third singles
(1-6, 6-4, 6-4), while Tamara Markvic also rallied for a 4-6,
6-2, 6-1 triumph over Leibowicz at fifth singles.
The Bearcats are off for a 12-day stretch. BU will travel to
Albany for a 2 p.m. dual match with the Great Danes on Friday,
March 18.
