Binghamton women's tennis wins 6-1 at Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y.-- Binghamton (5-1) recorded its third consecutive win and its first-ever over Cornell (3-3) winning 6-1 in Ithaca on Friday night.

In doubles, both teams split the first two matches before freshmen Emma Leibowitz and sophomore Lauren Bates won the clinching match at third doubles, 9-7, against Ruxandra Dumitrescu and Catherine Duboc.

Freshman Jilian Santos was leading 3-0 at first singles when her opponent, Stephanie Kent, retired. Earlier in the day, Santos teamed up with sophomore Yulia Smirnova to beat Kent and Natalia Sanchez 8-5 at first doubles. Smirnova also beat Elizabeth Googe 7-5, 6-3 at third singles.

Junior Danyelle Shapiro recorded a three-set win over Leah Seyburn at sixth singles, winning 6-4, 3-6, 10-8. Freshman Marina Bykovskaya also had a three-set triumph, defeating Shayna Miller 6-2, 6-7 (5), 10-8.

At second singles, sophomore Lauren Bates beat Sanchez 6-1, 7-5.

Binghamton heads to Harvard on Sunday for a 10 a.m. match.

NOTE: Binghamton had previously faced Cornell during the 2001-02 and 2004-05 seasons.
