Binghamton women's tennis opens season at Cornell Fall Tennis Invitational

ITHACA, N.Y.--Junior Lauren Bates won the A Singles Consolation Bracket and sophomore Emma Leibowicz advanced to the finals of the B Singles Main Draw, highlighting Binghamton's performance at the season-opening Cornell Fall Women's Tennis Invitational this past weekend. There was no team scoring kept at the event.

Bates dropped her opening match in the main draw but reeled off four wins in the consolation bracket. She defeated sophomore teammate Marina Bykovskaya 6-4, 7-6 (3) in the finals on Sunday morning.

Leibowicz, meanwhile, won four consecutive B singles matches before losing 6-4, 6-1 to Susan Sullivan of Cornell in the finals.

In the B Doubles Main Draw, Leibowicz and Smirnova advanced to the finals. They were eventually defeated 8-2 by Geraldine Leong and Kristin Kohagen of Cornell.

As for the A Doubles matches, junior Yulia Smirnova and sophomore Basak Gone won the consolation finals. They beat Stephanie Brown and Samantha Innacker 8-2.

Binghamton returns to action at the Eastern Collegiate Championships Sept. 25-27. The event will be hosted by Army.

NOTES: Shapiro now has a career record of 62-20. She is now tied for eighth all-time in program history with Buffy Schneit (1990-94), who went 62-19 during her career ... Bates is now 50-10 all time in doubles matches. She continues to be ranked sixth in program history with career victory.
