women's tennis goes 8-3 in opening day of Cornell Winter Invitational
ITHACA, N.Y.--Sophomore Jillian
Santos and juniors Lauren Bates and Anna Edelman
all swept their singles and doubles matches, highlighting Binghamton's
performance in the opening day of the Cornell Winter Women's
Tennis Invitational. The three-day event runs through Sunday.
Santos, who is ranked No. 20 among singles players in the Northeast
Region, scored a 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 win over No. 14 Denise Harijanto
of Buffalo in the A Singles Draw. In doubles play, Santos and
Bates (who are ranked No. 10 in the Northeast Region) beat Daria
Tuzhikova and Dumitria Iepuras of Bucknell 8-5 in the A bracket.
Bates also won 6-7, 6-2- 6-2 over Iepuras in A singles play.
Edelman, meanwhile, beat Courtney Casey of Bucknell 6-1, 6-0
in the B singles draw. She also joined sophomore Marina Bykovskaya
in A doubles play to defeat Natalia Sanchez and Susan Sullivan
of Cornell 8-6.
Binghamton won six of its eight singles matches and two of three
doubles contests.
Play continues Saturday in the second day of the Cornell Winter
