Smirnova
and Bykovskaya advance to first doubles finals at Eastern Collegiate
Women's Tennis Invitational
WEST POINT, N.Y.--Junior Yulia
Smirnova and sophomore Marina Bykovskaya placed second
in the first doubles main draw, highlighting the Binghamton women's
tennis team's showing at the Eastern Collegiate Invitational.
The three-day event, which had no team scoring, was hosted by
Army and concluded on Sunday.
Smirnova and Bykovskaya defeated
a pair of ranked opponents en route to a berth in Sunday's final.
They knocked off top-seeded Monique Burton and Stephanie LaFortune
of West Virginia 8-4 in the round of 16 and beat fifth-seeded
Adrienne Markinson and Sarah Viebrock of Quinnipiac in the quarterfinals,
8-5.
In the finals, however, Smirnova
and Bykovskaya were defeated by Candyce Boney and Maude Lecluyse
of UMass 8-5.
Sophomore Basak Gone advanced to the semifinals at fourth
singles. She too defeated a pair of seeded opponents. Gone beat
No. 2 Salome Mkervalidize of Stony Brook 6-4, 6-2 in the second
round and No. 7 Paige Ford of Army 6-1, 6-3 in the quarterfinals.
Gone's run ended with a 6-3, 6-3 loss to No. 6 Amanda Noble in
the semifinals.
Junior Lauren Bates
was the runner up in the first singles consolation bracket, losing
8-2 to Ira Aleksova of St. John's in the finals.
Also placing second was sophomore Emma Leibowicz in the
third singles consolation bracket. She lost 8-6 to Julia Prantl
of Fairleigh Dickinson in the finals.
Up next for Binghamton is the
USTA National Tennis Center Invitational Oct. 10-12. The event
will take place in Flushing, N.Y.
