VESTAL, N.Y. -- The Binghamton University women's tennis team (5-5, 1-0 AE) opened up its America East Conference schedule with a 7-0 win over Hartford (0-10, 0-3 AE) early Sunday afternoon at the West Gym Courts. The Bearcats swept all three doubles contests and six singles matches against the Hawks.

"Everyone looked solid from the top to the bottom of our lineup today," head coach Mike Stevens said. "It's nice to be playing well as we start conference play."

At No. 1 singles, freshman Juliana Umeki (Mogi des Cruises, Brazil), the current America East Conference Women's Tennis Co-Player of the Week, defeated Lauren Perry of Hartford 6-1, 6-1. In the process, she improved to 13-1 in singles matches since joining the squad in January as well as a perfect 10-0 in dual matches.

Junior Zeynep Altinay (Ankara, Turkey) also won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles against Raquel Casino. She now has 64 career singles wins, just five away from the school record 69 victories recorded by Lisa Denerstein (1988-92) and Julie Klein (1996-00).

Altinay and Umeki teamed up at No. 2 singles for an 8-0 win over Diana Stabers and Kasey Michels. At No. 1 doubles junior Jelena Koprivica (Belgrade, Serbia) and sophomore Jenn Naegeli (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) defeated Perry and Castino 8-0.

Koprivica swept Stabers 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles while fellow junior Lya Kushnirovich (Brooklyn, N.Y.) beat Michels 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 singles. Naegeli won the first set 6-0 at No. 5 singles before her opponent, Liz Weiner, was forced to retire due to an injury.
