Bates and Santos reach second round at ITA East Regional

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.-- Freshman Jillian Santos and sophomore Lauren Bates each advanced to the second round of the the ITA East Regional Championships at the University of Pennsylvania this past weekend. It marked just the second time in Binghamton's seven-year Division I history that it has had a pair of players advance to the round of 64 in the tournament.

A day after winning a pair of matches in the qualification round, Bates scored a 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 win over Diana Popesov of Buffalo in the opening round of the main draw on Saturday. Santos, meanwhile, earned an automatic bid to the main draw and defeated Lindsay Gray of George Mason 6-3, 7-5 in her first round match.

On Sunday in the second round, Santos was defeated 6-1, 6-1 by No. 3 Ragini Acharya of William & Mary and Bates lost 6-4, 6-2 to No. 17 Stefanie Nunic of Boston University.

In doubles play on Saturday, Santos and Bates were defeated in the first round by Lana Kirasapolsky & Lauren Cash of Boston College 8-4.

NOTE: The other time Binghamton had a pair of players advance to the second round of the ITA East Regional came in 2005. Zeynep Altinay reached the third round while Lya Kushnirovich made it to the second round.
