Unbeaten women's tennis ties best start in school history with 6-1 win over Niagara

VESTAL, N.Y.-- The Binghamton women's tennis team (6-0) tied its best dual match start in school history with a 6-1 win over Niagara (4-5) in women's tennis action on Sunday morning at the Binghamton Tennis Center. The Bearcats tied the record set by the inaugural 1972-73 squad and tied for the 1987-88 team.

Against the Purple Eagles, Binghamton swept all three doubles matches and went on to win five of the six singles matches. In their six dual events this season, the Bearcats are 17-1 in doubles matches.

Senior Zeynep Altinay (Ankara, Turkey) won her school-record 79th career singles match, defeating Vanja Lakic 6-0, 6-0 at first singles. She is now 79-25 all time. Altinay and freshman Erica Rosenblum (Albany, N.Y.) teamed up at No. 2 doulbes to defeat Lakic and Shella Dargout 8-1. Rosenblum also defeated Dargout at fourth singles 6-1, 7-5.

Senior Lya Kushnirovich (Brooklyn, N.Y.) defeated Julianne Prokopich 6-1, 6-1 at third singles, running her career record to 77-28. She also teamed up with sophomore Juliana Umeki (Mogi de Cruises, Brazil) at first doubles to defeat Jennifer Cremieux and Molly Matthews 8-1. Umeki also won at second singles, defeating Cremieux 6-1, 6-0.

Sophomore Nicole Scarangella (Massapequa, N.Y.) defeated Kim Roberts at sixth singles 6-2, 6-2. She won at third doubles with junior Jenn Naegeli (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) with an 8-4 win over Prokovich and Jacquelyn Cary.

Up next for Binghamton is a key non-conference match against Massachusetts on Friday at 6 p.m. in Ithaca, N.Y.
