Women's tennis defeats NJIT 5-2 for third consecutive win

VESTAL, N.Y.-- Seniors Zeynep Altinay (Ankara, Turkey) and Lya Kushnirovich (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each won their singles and doubles matches, leading Binghamton (9-1) to a 5-2 win over the New Jersey Institute of Technology (10-7) in a non-conference women's tennis match on Wednesday afternoon at the West Gym Courts. The Bearcats have now won three straight dual matches and their 9-1 record represents the best start in school history through 10 matches (the old record of 8-2 was held by the 1987-88 squad).

"It was good to get the match and to get the win under such (cold and windy) conditions," head coach Mike Stevens said. "New Jersey (Institute of Technology) was a tough opponent and played us very well in several matches."

Altinay, who is now 82-26 all time in singles matches, defeated Fatima Kasem 6-3, 6-2 at the second slot and joined junior Jenn Naegeli (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) at third doubles to defeat Choiri Koke and Marine Henry 8-5. Kushnirovich, meanwhile, improved to 79-30 all time in singles play with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Isha Toor at the No. 3 position. She also won at first doubles with sophomore Juliana Umeki (Mogi de Cruises, Brazil), defeating Iulia Doci and Kasem 8-6.

Freshman Danyelle Shapiro (Boca Raton, Fla.) defeated Henry 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4 singles and sophomore Nicole Scarangella (Massapequa, N.Y.) beat Fanny Aizier 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 singles.

NJIT took a pair of tie breakers in singles play. Doci defeated Umeki 6-2, 2-6, 10-2 at first singles while Koke defeated Naegeli 6-4, 0-6, 10-8 at No. 6 singles.

Binghamton heads to Florida next week for its three-match spring trip.
