Women's tennis drops opening dual match of 2011 campaign
Tandem of Bates/Leibowicz earn 8-1 victory at third doubles

The women's tennis team (0-1) suffered a 4-3 setback in its opening dual match to Syracuse (3-1) at the Drumlins Tennis Center Friday evening.

Binghamton was unable to secure the doubles point, but went on to split the singles matches for a close 4-3 decision.

Senior Lauren Bates teamed up with junior Emma Leibowicz for the squad's only win in doubles play. The tandem of Bates and Leibowicz captured the B Doubles title in the Cornell Winter Invitational last weekend.

Junior Jillian Santos notched a comeback victory at second singles as she improved to 12-4 in singles play this season. Classmate Marina Bykovskaya tallied a straight-set victory at fifth singles, while senior Yulia Smirnova posted a 6-3, 6-2 win at fourth singles.

Senior Anna Edelman, who captured the A Singles crown at the Cornell Winter Invitational last week, fell at first singles in a close battle, 6-7(5), 7-6(5), 7-6(5).

The Bearcats next compete in a doubleheader at Army on Saturday. Binghamton will face Seton Hall in the first match, followed by a meeting with the host Black Knights.
