Binghamton women's tennis defeats Temple 6-1

VESTAL, N.Y.-- Junior Lauren Bates became the third player in program history to win 70 career singles matches, highlighting a 6-1 win by Binghamton (12-2) over Temple (7-11) in women's tennis action on Sunday afternoon at the West Gym Courts. The win is the fifth straight for the Bearcats.

Bates, who is now 70-26 all time, recorded a 6-1, 6-2 win over Anastasia Rukavshnykova at first singles. At second doubles, she joined sophomore Emma Leibowicz for an 8-1 win against Josephine Bergman and Katharina Mittag.

Junior Anna Edelman and and sophomore Marina Bykovskaya won 8-4 at first doubles against Rukavshnykova and Lucie Pazderova. Edelman went on to beat Bergman 7-6 (2), 6-3 at second singles.

At third doubles, sophomore Jillian Santos and junior Yulia Smirnova won 8-3 over Theresa Stangl and May Johnson. Smirnova later beat Stangl 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 at fourth singles while Santos scored a 6-2, 6-1 win over Pazderova at third singles.

Senior Danyelle Shapiro was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Katharina Mittag at sixth singles.

Binghamton travels to Albany on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. match.

PLEASE NOTE: Bates currently ranks third all time in program history in career singles wins She trails Zeynep Altinay (2003-07), who won 86 matches and Lya Kushnirovich (2003-07), who had 84 wins.
