Day One Results
FLUSHING, N.Y.-- Sophomores Yulia
Smirnova and Lauren
Bates advanced to the semifinals of the Flight 2 Doubles,
highlighting Binghamton's second and final day at the USTA National
College Invitational. It marks the first time in its seven-year
Division I history that the Bearcats have taken part in the prestigious
event.
Smirnova and Bates defeated Simone Kalhorn and Ashley Spicer
of Syracuse 8-4 the quarterfinals but lost to Katarina Gajic
and Dasha Cherkasoc 9-7 in the semifinals. Earlier in the day
Bates won her Flight 3 singles match against Emilia Monell 6-3,
6-4.
In Flight 2 singles, freshman Jillian
Santos dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision to Stephanie Davidson
of Texas A & M. Smirnova, meanwhile, lost 6-1, 6-3 to Lauren
Santacroce of Texas A & M at Flight 4.
Bates won two of her three singles and doubles matches during
the weekend.
Binghamton heads to the ITA East Regional in Philadelphia Oct.
23-27.
