Over 540 guests attend event, which featured Julie Foudy as
VESTAL, N.Y. Olympic and World Cup Soccer champion Julie
Foudy was the guest speaker at the Sixth Annual Bearcats Celebrating
Women's Athletics Luncheon on Monday afternoon at the Events
Center. The luncheon, which is held each year to recognize the
achievements of Binghamton University's female student-athletes,
attracted over 540 guests--a record turnout for the event.
In the five previous years, the event has raised over $70,000
to support the BUAC Women's Scholarship Fund. The scholarship
was established in 2007 and is awarded annually to a deserving
female student-athlete. The luncheon began in 2006 with just
75 attendees, and is today one of the athletics department's
"I am excited to be here," Foudy said. "It is
great that you do this every year. One of the reasons why I am
a long-time advocate of Title IX is because of all the things
young girls and women can learn about life by having a chance
to be involved in sports. I had the opportunity to be surrounded
by amazing women and I learned so much from them."
Speaking on behalf of the BU female student-athletes, senior
swimmer Amanda Ciccone expressed similar sentiments.
"Being a female athlete at Binghamton is both a privilege
and an honor," she said. "It has taught all of us lessons
for life after college."
"We have an awful lot to be proud of with our women's teams,"
Binghamton interim Athletic Director Jim Norris said. "All
of our coaches and student-athletes embrace the core values of
integrity, excellence and service."
The luncheon is held each February as part of a series of national
celebratory events surrounding National Girls and Women in Sports
Day. National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) began in
1986 as a day to honor the achievements of all female athletes
and recognize the positive influence of sports participation.
